Abstract

This study develops an understanding about voting behaviour among Pakhtuns in general and its correlation with ‘family relations’ and family socialization in particular. The study uses the broader framework of Social Network Theory and relates it to voting behaviour. The field work was conducted in district Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2014. A sample of 500 respondents was selected through multi-stage random and systematic sampling from the voters list of Charsadda. The analysis shows that a substantial number of respondents have given preference to ‘family relations’, while voting in 2008 general elections. It thus argues that ‘family relations’ and family socialization are the key determinants of electoral behaviour especially among Pakhtuns in Pakistan. Results of the study highlight that age of the voter is an important factor in this regard.
