Exploring Self-Concept: Rural and Urban Underpinnings

Abstract


Self-concept is an important construct that provides significant information regarding the mental health of adolescents. The present study aims to explore the understanding of self-concept by rural and urban adolescents of India. Participants aged between 13 to 18 years responded to the question “Who am I?”. Twelve themes were arrived upon using thematic analysis. The results suggest that the understanding of self-concept differs for the rural and urban adolescents on certain dimensions. The study further divulges the changes that have taken place and the new ways in which adolescents have started viewing their ‘selves’
