Gender Equity and Sustainable Development

Sushma H.B.

An attempt has been made to expose how Nation can find its progress by bridging the gender gap, as gender equity and development are closely tied and bridging the gap is not the end but should ensure sustainable development by recognizing the importance of two sexes as complementary biological entities and by respecting equity. The main objectives of the study are to highlight the means of promoting equal opportunities between male and female in the society, facilitating improved quality of operations and analytical work for women. Further suggestions have been made as to how gender equality helps in sustainable development and the implementation.

Several policies both at national and international levels are made to check gender equity and equality like Bill C-31, An Act to Amend the Indian Act, Bill C-3, Gender Equity In Indian Registration Act, at National and Gender Equality Duty, International Labour Office, Social Development Department, World Bank Group, Gender action Plan, Gender Mainstreaming at international level . Though ample policies have been made to check gender discrimination, recent survey of G20 countries found that most developed economies showed greater gender equity. Best way to transfer such society is to convince government and private sector of the business case for the advancement of women and to develop positive attitude towards females by male folks. Sustainable development isn’t possible when half the nation work force can’t fulfills its potential. Country can progress by including women in society development activities in a meaningful way, remove barriers for their advancement and offers same opportunities for education and healthcare as men.
