Effect of Land Use and Land Cover Change on Local Livelihood: A case Study in Cambodia

The study aims to identify and analyze rural people’s attitudes, knowledge and perception of land-use change, and to examine the impact of land use change on local people’s livelihood. The cross-sectional data were collected from 92 respondents using pre-structured questionnaires. The findings illustrate that the respondents are aware of changes in land use patterns over the course of this period. The sampled population indicates that the driving forces of this change included population growth, logging business, and agricultural expansion, especially ELC. The finding also reveals that land use change has influenced not only direct on their everyday life needs, but also effect on agricultural production and natural resources. This was based on their perception and interpretation of indicators such as challenging in land use and forest access, reduction of forest product local consumption, and disputed land between local people and private company, overexploitation of logging business, and the hardship of respondents in generating income with multiple jobs. These are the main threats which hinder the sustainability of rural livelihood in the area. Finally, at the end of this study some recommendations have proposed to the relevant institutions, NGOs and government over considering on the current local issues and other better ways of implementation and contribution in local sustainable development.
