Why Urbanization Matters for Africa: From MDGs to the Post-15 Development Agenda

The structural and transformative change in Africa is currently shaped by the way in which countries embrace urbanization.  By committing to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable in the Post-2015 agenda, member States of the United Nations have marked a net difference from and transition with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Urbanization is now recognized as one of the key levers of socio-economic transformation. This paper unpacks the evolution of urbanization agenda from a sub-indicator in MDG to a standalone goal in Post-2015 development agenda.
