A Study on Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana With Special References to Poverty Alleviation

Kirti Agrawal

Poverty reduction, or poverty alleviation, is a set of measures, both economic and humanitarian, that are intended to permanently lift people out of poverty. Poverty reduction occurs largely as a result of overall economic growth. . It is recognized that poverty is an outcome of multiple deprivations and it is not simply a matter of inadequate income but also a matter of low literacy, short life expectation and lack of basic needs such as drinking water. Since these deprivations are inter-related, a comprehensive approach alone can eliminate poverty and ensure optimal utilization of human resources for sustainable development. Poverty alleviation also involves improving the living conditions of people who are already poor. Several poverty alleviation programmes have been in place for a long time now. The programmes and schemes have been modified, consolidated, expanded and improved over time. Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana is a very important tool for combating unemployment and underemployment in the rural areas and for attacking rural mass poverty and raising the rural poor above the poverty line.
